The Regional Natural Park of Vercors is located in the French Alps and is comprised of high mountain plateaus and steep limestone cliffs that give way to forested valleys and green pastures reflecting a rich cultural heritage.
The Vercors International Dark Sky Reserve stretches over the southern three-quarters of the park, covering an incredible 1600 square kilometers–enveloping 39 communities, a Natura 2000 site, and a “core zone” of about 245 square kilometers, the High Plateaux Natural Reserve (the largest land-based metropolitan reserve in France).
As a newly designated DarkSky place, the Park of Vercors will continue to work closely with local authorities and communities by supporting lighting renovation projects and the development of a night-time tourism initiative that will provide dark-sky training and support to local professionals. The park will continue to grow awareness for dark sky principles through campaigns and programs aimed at educating and engaging local residents, children, and visitors to the park.
