Pousada Verbicaro, located in Santa Maria Madalena, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, has been officially certified as a DarkSky Approved Lodging by DarkSky International. This prestigious designation recognizes the hotel’s commitment to protecting the night sky through sustainable lighting practices while providing guests with an unforgettable stargazing experience.
Founded in June 2007, Pousada Verbicaro is a business rooted in sustainability, showcasing its dedication to conservation and responsible tourism. Named in honor of the Verbicaro family, Italian immigrants who settled in Santa Maria Madalena in the late 19th century, the property spans 0.48 sq. km (119 acres). Of this, 0.12 sq. km (29 acres) are designated as a Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN), protecting a portion of the Atlantic Forest, while the main lodge and recreation area occupy 0.02 sq. km (5 acres). The hotel features 15 guest rooms designed to offer a tranquil retreat in harmony with nature.
Pousada Verbicaro exemplifies sustainable tourism through its use of solar and thermal panels for water heating, reducing reliance on traditional energy sources. Strategically located along Madalena Terras Frias Road, just five minutes from the city center, the hotel sits at an altitude of 690 meters (2,263 ft), benefiting from a mild climate and a naturally dark sky. Its secluded valley location, far from artificial light sources, makes it an ideal destination for stargazing.
The hotel’s dedication to eco-friendly practices extends beyond lighting. Its on-site organic gardens supply fresh produce, while locally sourced eggs support sustainable agriculture. Waste reduction is also a priority, with recycling programs in place to minimize environmental impact.
Through partnerships with the Louis Cruls Astronomy Club and DarkSky Rio de Janeiro, Pousada Verbicaro actively promotes astrotourism and public astronomy education. The hotel hosts guided night sky observation sessions, providing guests access to a telescope for up-close views of celestial wonders. During these events, all exterior lights are turned off, allowing visitors to witness the Milky Way in its full glory. A green laser tour helps guests identify major constellations and bright stars.
