Observatory Park at Turner Farm is a unique site in Great Falls, Virginia, offering a naturally dark night sky near a major city. Just 16 miles west of Washington, D.C., the park protects land that previously housed a U.S. Army facility crucial to the development of the Global Positioning System (GPS). Great Falls remains the darkest spot within a 30-mile radius of Washington, D.C. The park is managed through a partnership between the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) and the nonprofit Analemma Society, which promotes science through astronomy for both children and adults.
To preserve its dark skies, the park enforces a strict Lighting Management Plan (LMP). In November 2023, the park received a specialized lighting ordinance from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, which limits outdoor lighting within a half-mile radius of the observatory. The park actively reduces the impact of lighting on wildlife by keeping green spaces unlit and encouraging visitors to use red-light flashlights.
Education is a central component of the park’s mission. It offers programs like the new “Dark Skies and Light Pollution” class, along with astronomy classes and viewing nights. The FCPA and the Analemma Society partnered with the Girl Scouts of America to create an official Dark Sky Patch. Other partners, including Dark Sky Friends and DarkSky NOVA, help provide educational resources. The park also collaborates with libraries on a Sky Quality Literacy Program, where the public can borrow Sky Quality Meters to measure the brightness of the night sky.
Observatory Park at Turner Farm is open daily from dawn to dusk. After hours, the park is accessible through public viewings on Friday nights (weather permitting), registered FCPA classes, building rentals, or permits for astrophotography. During evening programs, visitors are asked to use red lights on their personal devices to preserve night vision and protect nocturnal animals.
