Rancho La Concepción, in Baja California, México, has been officially designated DarkSky Approved Lodging by DarkSky International, recognizing the property’s commitment to protecting the natural night through responsible outdoor lighting and meaningful night-sky experiences for guests.

With technical and scientific guidance from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Rancho La Concepción has adapted its lighting system to meet the criteria of the Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting. These efforts help ensure that lighting on the property minimizes impacts on the night sky while allowing visitors to experience the beauty of naturally dark nights.

Located just a few kilometers from Sierra de San Pedro Mártir National Park, one of the leading locations in the world for astronomical observation, Rancho La Concepción is surrounded by forests and clear skies. Its remote setting, largely free from light pollution, provides an ideal environment for astrotourism, quiet contemplation of nature, and restful nights under the stars.

Achieving the DarkSky Approved Lodging designation required a comprehensive effort of adaptation, learning, and commitment. The ranch conducted a detailed audit of its facilities, identifying each light source and assessing its environmental impact. As a result, lighting fixtures across the property were adjusted to reduce light pollution while maintaining safe and functional illumination for guests.

In addition to these lighting improvements, Rancho La Concepción has developed an education and community participation program designed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the night. Activities such as star parties, astrophotography experiences, nighttime gatherings, and guided owl walks help connect night sky conservation with the biodiversity and cultural heritage of the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir region.

“At Rancho La Concepción, we believe that protecting dark skies is part of healing our relationship with the Earth,” said César Guerrero-Ávila, General Director of Rancho La Concepción. “Now more than ever, it’s not only about the planet we leave to future generations, but about the kind of future generations we leave to the universe.”

Rancho La Concepción plans to continue its work to protect the night skies of the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir and raise awareness about dark sky conservation throughout Mexico. Through workshops, events, and collaboration, the ranch hopes to inspire other tourism initiatives to adopt responsible lighting practices and invite visitors to reconnect with the stars.
